Can You Stay Home During Mold Remediation?
Finding mold in your home is stressful enough. Then comes the next worry: do we have to move out while it gets fixed? In most cases, no. A proper mold remediation job is set up so you can stay home safely. Here is how it works.
Containment Keeps Mold Where It Is
Before our crew touches any mold, they seal off the work area with heavy plastic sheeting and tape. Then they put that sealed zone under negative air pressure. That is a simple way of saying air can flow into the work area but not back out. So spores cannot drift into the rest of your house. Hospitals use this same method to control infections.
HEPA Filtration Cleans the Air
Inside the sealed area, we run air scrubbers with HEPA filters. These catch 99.97% of tiny airborne particles, including mold spores. The air in your living areas stays clean while the affected room gets treated. You might hear a low hum from the machines, about as loud as a strong household fan.
When Staying Elsewhere Makes Sense
There are a few cases where we suggest staying somewhere else for a bit:
- Whole-house contamination — when mold has spread through the HVAC system or several rooms, sealing off one area is not enough.
- Severe health sensitivity — babies, elderly family members, or anyone with serious breathing problems may feel better elsewhere while work is going on.
- Large-scale demolition — if a lot of material needs to come out, a day or two away is more comfortable.
We will tell you honestly at inspection which one your job falls into. Most home mold jobs do not need you to move out.
What About Kids and Pets?
Kids and pets should stay out of the sealed work area, the same way they would stay away from any construction zone. The rest of the house stays safe and usable. Our crews work around families every day and will walk you through a few simple precautions.
How Long Does It Take?
One room usually takes one to three days. Bigger jobs can take up to a week. We update you every day and check moisture readings and do a visual inspection before we take the containment down.
